It answers a useful scale-neutral question: for every dollar of sales, how much operating earnings remain before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization? The formula is EBITDA divided by total revenue, multiplied by 100. If a company reports $122,000 of EBITDA on $1,000,000 of revenue, its EBITDA margin is 12.20%. When EBITDA is not directly available, the EBITDA margin calculator derives it by adding interest expense, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to net income. The operating-profit output removes depreciation and amortization from EBITDA, giving a simple view close to EBIT when the inputs are classified consistently. A higher EBITDA margin can indicate pricing power, efficient operations, favorable product mix, or fixed costs spread over more revenue. A falling margin can signal price competition, input-cost inflation, lower utilization, or a shift toward lower-margin work. Context matters: software, retail, manufacturing, transportation, telecom, and professional services have very different capital intensity and normal margins. Rapid growth can temporarily reduce margin as a company invests in staff, marketing, facilities, or new markets. A high margin does not automatically mean high free cash flow if the business requires substantial investment in equipment, inventory, or customer financing.
Compare figures calculated under the same accounting policy and reporting period. Review adjusted EBITDA disclosures carefully because management may exclude restructuring charges, stock compensation, litigation, or other expenses. Currency should remain consistent across revenue and EBITDA, though the percentage itself is currency-neutral. Interest, taxes, and depreciation are still economically significant even though EBITDA margin excludes them.
