About Dividend Yield and Total Return
Dividend investors care about current yield, how much of earnings is paid out, whether the dividend is growing, and what total return looked like over a holding period. The dividend calculator combines those views. Current yield uses today’s price. Total return uses beginning price plus dividends versus ending price. Optional earnings and a prior-year dividend add payout ratio and dividend growth.
Dividend yield = annual dividend ÷ stock price. Payout ratio = annual dividend ÷ earnings per share when EPS is provided. Dividend growth = annual dividend ÷ previous dividend − 1. Price return = ending price ÷ beginning price − 1. Total return = price return + (annual dividend ÷ beginning price). On a $50 stock with a $2.50 dividend, yield is 5.00%. With EPS $5.00 the payout is 50.00%. From a $2.25 prior dividend, growth is 11.11%. From $45 to $52, total return is 21.11%.
Use current yield to compare income stocks, payout ratio to judge sustainability, and total return to evaluate a completed year. A high yield with a 90% payout can be less durable than a 3% yield with a 40% payout. Total return can be negative even with a positive yield if the share price falls more than the dividend.
Dividends are not guaranteed. Boards can cut or suspend them. Yield uses the current price you enter, which may already capitalize a recent cut or special dividend. Special dividends will distort growth if you treat them as recurring. Blank optional fields produce zeros for payout, growth, and total-return components rather than inventing data—fill them only when you have figures from the same share class.
Current yield and total return answer different questions. Yield is the income rate at today’s price; total return is the holding-period result including price change. When beginning price is blank, total return in this form will not include a meaningful price or dividend-return component, so fill those optional fields whenever you want a holding-period story. Compare payout with free cash flow as well as EPS, because non-cash earnings can make a 50% payout look safer than the cash budget supports.
Dividend Calculator Examples
These worked examples follow the same formula as the calculator and provide a practical way to check your inputs.
| Input | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Price $50; dividend $2.50; EPS $5.00; prior dividend $2.25; begin $45; end $52 | Yield 5.00%; total return 21.11% | Payout is 50% and dividend growth is 11.11%. Moving from $45 to $52 plus the $2.50 dividend on beginning price totals 21.11%. |
| Price $40; dividend $2.00; EPS $4.00; prior dividend $1.60; begin $40; end $44 | Yield 5.00%; total return 15.00% | A 25% dividend increase and a 10% price gain produce a 15% total return when the dividend is measured on beginning price. |
| Price $80; dividend $1.20; EPS $6.00; prior dividend $1.20; begin $85; end $78 | Yield 1.50%; total return -6.82% | A flat dividend cannot offset an 8.24% price decline; total return is still negative at −6.82%. |

Dividend Calculator FAQ
What is dividend yield?
Dividend yield is annual cash dividends per share divided by current stock price. It is a snapshot of income relative to today’s market price, not a guaranteed forward return.
What does payout ratio mean?
Payout ratio measures the portion of earnings per share distributed as dividends. It is less meaningful when earnings are zero or negative, and a very high payout can leave little reinvestment capacity.
Why can total return differ from current yield?
Total return combines share-price change with dividends earned over a period, while current yield uses current share price. A falling price can more than offset a high yield.
Are dividends guaranteed?
No. Boards can change, suspend, or eliminate dividends. Historical growth and yield do not guarantee future distributions.
