About Goods and Services Tax Calculations
A goods and services tax (GST) is a consumption tax added to many sales of goods and services. The seller calculates tax on the taxable base, collects the resulting total from the customer, and generally reports the tax under the applicable jurisdiction's rules. The GST formulas perform the arithmetic between a pretax base, a percentage rate, the GST amount, and a tax-inclusive total. It does not determine whether a transaction is taxable.
For an exclusive price, GST amount equals base amount multiplied by the GST rate divided by 100. The total equals base plus tax. A $1,000 base at 18% produces $180 GST and a $1,180 total. To remove tax from an inclusive price, divide the total by one plus the decimal rate. For example, $1,180 divided by 1.18 returns the $1,000 base; subtracting that base from the total returns $180 tax.
The rate must match the location, supply date, product classification, seller status, and customer treatment. Countries that use the term GST have different standard and reduced rates, exemptions, registration thresholds, place-of-supply rules, and rounding requirements. Some invoices also include provincial, state, municipal, import, excise, or environmental charges. Do not infer a legal rate from the examples shown here.
Businesses use GST calculations to draft invoices, verify supplier bills, reconcile point-of-sale reports, and separate tax from inclusive receipts. Input-tax credits, reverse-charge transactions, zero-rated exports, exemptions, bad-debt adjustments, and partial business use require additional accounting beyond a single multiplication. A tax amount collected from a customer is generally a liability until remitted, not ordinary sales revenue.
Keep enough decimal precision during calculation and round only according to local invoice rules. Line-level rounding can differ from rounding tax once on an invoice subtotal, causing small reconciliation differences. Confirm whether discounts are applied before or after tax and whether delivery or service charges belong in the taxable base. Use the GST results as an arithmetic check, then consult current tax authority guidance or a qualified adviser for classification, filing, and credit eligibility.
GST Examples
Examples cover adding GST and extracting it from a tax-inclusive total.
| Price and Rate | GST Result | Method |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 base at 18% | $180.00 GST; $1,180.00 total | Multiply the base by 0.18, then add the tax. |
| $200 base at 5% | $10.00 GST; $210.00 total | A reduced rate creates a $10 tax amount. |
| $1,180 inclusive total at 18%, with base cleared | $1,000.00 base; $180.00 GST | Divide the inclusive price by 1.18 to remove GST. |

- Check rounding and invoice rules before recording or filing the amount.
GST Calculator FAQ
How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the pretax price by the GST rate as a decimal to find the tax amount. Add that GST to the base price to get the tax-inclusive total.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive total?
Divide the inclusive total by one plus the GST rate as a decimal. The difference between total and base is the included tax.
Does the GST calculator choose the correct rate?
No. Rates and exemptions depend on jurisdiction, date, product, and transaction facts. Confirm the rate with the relevant tax authority.
Why can invoice tax differ by a cent?
Systems may round tax per line or once on the subtotal. Both approach and required decimal precision depend on local invoicing rules.
