Liquid Net Worth Calculator - Assets and Liabilities
Calculate liquid net worth, liquid assets, short-term debts, and liquidity coverage from cash, accounts, and investments.
About the Liquid Net Worth Calculator
Liquid net worth is the slice of your balance sheet you could turn into cash quickly to cover near-term bills. It is narrower than total net worth, which also includes a home, a car, retirement accounts with penalties, and private business equity. Emergency-fund planning, lending conversations, and a job-loss drill all depend on this tighter number. The liquid net worth calculator adds cash, checking, savings, and investments you could sell without a long lockup, then subtracts credit-card balances and other short-term loans.
Total liquid assets equal cash on hand plus checking plus savings plus liquid investments. Total liquid liabilities equal credit-card debt plus short-term loans. Liquid net worth is assets minus liabilities. Liquidity coverage is liquid assets divided by liquid liabilities, shown as a percent. If short-term liabilities are zero, coverage is reported as 0 percent because there is no liability base to divide by; the useful figure in that case is the asset total itself.
Count brokerage cash and publicly traded stocks or funds you could sell in days as liquid investments. Do not include a primary residence, collectibles, or a 401(k) you would raid only with tax and penalty cost unless you truly intend to treat them as spendable. On the liability side, include the full credit-card statement balance and personal or payday loans due soon, not the 30-year mortgage principal. A high total net worth can still hide a thin liquid position if wealth is in a house and cards are carrying the lifestyle.
Use the liquid net worth calculator before a large cash purchase, when sizing an emergency fund, or when a lender asks about liquidity. Coverage above 100 percent means liquid assets exceed short-term debts; well above that is more comfortable for several months of expenses. Negative liquid net worth means near-term debts outrun cash and salable investments, even if a home equity figure looks fine on paper.
Market prices of investments move, and a sale can trigger taxes. Credit limits are not assets. The calculator does not subtract monthly living costs or upcoming tuition. Revisit the numbers after a bonus, a tax payment, or a market drop. For a lending or hardship decision, pair liquid net worth with a budget and with statements that prove the balances you typed.
Liquid Net Worth Examples
Each case subtracts credit cards and short-term loans from cash, bank accounts, and salable investments.
| Scenario | Output | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Cash $2,000, checking $8,500, savings $12,000, investments $15,000, cards $3,200, short-term loans $1,800 | $32,500.00 liquid net worth; $37,500.00 assets; $5,000.00 liabilities; 750.00% coverage | A healthy buffer: liquid assets are 7.5 times near-term debts. |
| Cash $500, checking $2,500, savings $0, investments $4,000, cards $6,000, short-term loans $2,000 | -$1,000.00 liquid net worth; $7,000.00 assets; $8,000.00 liabilities; 87.50% coverage | Cards and short-term loans exceed cashable assets, so liquidity is negative. |
| Cash $10,000, checking $20,000, savings $35,000, investments $50,000, cards $0, short-term loans $0 | $115,000.00 liquid net worth; $115,000.00 assets; $0.00 liabilities; 0.00% coverage | With no short-term debt, coverage is shown as 0 percent; judge the $115,000 asset stock instead. |

Liquid Net Worth Calculator FAQ
Should retirement accounts count as liquid?
Only if you would actually sell them and can live with taxes and penalties. Most emergency-fund views leave 401(k) and similar accounts out of liquid net worth.
Is a home part of liquid net worth?
No. A house is part of total net worth but is slow and costly to turn into cash. Home equity lines are liabilities if drawn, not liquid assets.
Why is coverage 0 percent when I have no debt?
Coverage divides assets by liabilities. When liabilities are zero the liquid net worth calculator reports 0 percent rather than infinity. Use the asset total as the planning number.
Do I enter the credit limit or the balance?
Enter the balance you owe. Unused credit is not an asset in this layout and unused limit is not a liability.
How much liquid net worth is enough?
Many households aim for three to six months of expenses in cash-like form, separate from long-term investments. Your target depends on job stability, dependents, and insurance.
