Moving Average Calculator - SMA WMA and EMA

About this calculator

A moving average calculator turns a sequence of prices or observations into a smoother trend measure. Paste values separated by commas, spaces, or new lines, select a lookback period, and choose a simple moving average (SMA), weighted moving average (WMA), or exponential moving average (EMA). The calculator returns the latest average, the number of observations accepted, the period used, and the selected method. Traders may use it for stocks, foreign exchange, commodities, or crypto; analysts can apply the same arithmetic to sales, traffic, inventory, or any ordered time series. For an SMA, the calculator adds the most recent number of observations equal to the chosen period and divides by that period. For a WMA, those same observations receive weights 1 through n, with the newest observation receiving the highest weight; the weighted sum is divided by n(n + 1)/2. For an EMA, the calculation starts from the first supplied value and repeatedly applies EMA(t) = alpha × price(t) + (1 − alpha) × EMA(t−1). If alpha is blank, it defaults to the common smoothing constant 2/(period + 1). Shorter periods react quickly but can generate more noise. Longer periods are steadier but lag turning points. WMA and EMA emphasize newer data, making them more responsive than an equal-weight SMA. An alpha near 1 makes the EMA follow the latest reading closely, while an alpha near 0 gives more influence to its history. The period must be at least one and cannot exceed the supplied observations. Values that are not valid numbers are ignored during parsing. Use consistent intervals: do not mix daily closes with intraday prices or monthly revenue with weekly revenue. Compare a short and long moving average to assess trend direction, but do not treat a crossover as a guarantee of future performance. This calculator provides a transparent arithmetic indicator, not an investment recommendation. Check the data source, account for spreads and costs, and combine moving averages with independent risk controls before trading.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

The arithmetic is exact for the values entered, but real outcomes can differ because rates, fees, timing, and rules may change.

Can I use this for planning?

Yes. Use it for estimates and scenario comparisons, then verify important decisions with current documents or a qualified professional.

What should I enter for optional fields?

Leave an optional field blank when it does not apply. The calculator treats a blank optional amount as zero.

Why does a result change after one input changes?

Many financial measures depend on linked assumptions, so changing one input can affect every related result.
