About Lost Wages Assistance (LWA)

Lost Wages Assistance was a 2020 FEMA program that paid an extra $300 a week to eligible unemployment claimants after the $600 CARES FPUC supplement expired. States had to opt in, and claimants generally needed a weekly benefit of at least $100. The Lost Wages Assistance calculator estimates total pay as the weekly state benefit plus the weekly LWA amount, times weeks, plus any additional benefits you enter for other supplements or back pay. A $300 state check plus $300 LWA for 6 weeks is $3,600. A $400 state check plus $300 LWA for 3 weeks plus $200 of extra benefits is $2,300. A single week of $200 state UI plus $300 LWA is $500. Most states used a $300 LWA amount; enter a different figure only if your agency paid another authorized amount. LWA covered a short window, typically up to six weeks depending on the state’s agreement and funding. Payments were often delayed and issued in batches, so the week you “claimed” and the week money arrived can differ. The additional-benefits field is a place to add a one-time adjustment without changing the weekly math. The calculator does not test the $100 minimum weekly benefit, mixed-eligibility weeks, or tax withholding. It is not a FEMA or state claim form. Recalculate using only weeks the state certified for LWA, and confirm historical totals against the agency payment history if you are reconstructing 2020 income. States also required claimants to be eligible for at least $100 of weekly unemployment in many implementations, so a tiny partial-benefit week might not have received LWA even if regular UI paid something. If you are reconstructing a 2020 tax year, separate LWA weeks from earlier $600 FPUC weeks and from later $300 FPUC weeks under subsequent law. Mixing those programs in one week count will overstate or understate income relative to the 1099-G. Keep the program name next to the total whenever the figure is used in a benefits or tax discussion.

LWA Calculator FAQ

Was LWA always $300 per week?

Most participating states paid $300. Enter the amount your agency actually paid if it differed. Do not enter the expired $600 CARES supplement in the LWA field.

Did every claimant qualify?

No. States set rules, including a common $100 minimum weekly benefit. This calculator does not enforce eligibility.

How many weeks should I enter?

Enter only weeks the state certified for LWA, often up to six. Extra claimed weeks without LWA certification should stay out of the week count.

Are LWA payments taxable?

Federal tax treatment followed unemployment rules. This total is pre-tax. Apply withholding separately if you need a net figure.

What belongs in additional benefits?

One-time extras such as a separate supplement or an adjustment that is not weekly LWA. Leave the field blank or zero if you have none.
