About Weighted Average Cost of Capital

The WACC calculator turns a focused set of financial inputs into a repeatable planning estimate. It estimates the blended required return paid to equity and debt capital providers after recognizing the conventional interest tax shield. The calculator is intended to make the arithmetic visible and consistent, not to replace source documents, professional advice, or a decision maker's judgment. Enter values from the same period and use the same units throughout. A result is only as reliable as the assumptions entered. The calculation follows this approach: Equity and debt market values are divided by total capital for weights. The debt cost is multiplied by one minus the marginal tax rate, then weighted debt and equity costs are added. Percentages are entered as ordinary percentages, so 7.5 means 7.5%, and money values are treated as US dollars unless the interface says otherwise. Intermediate calculations retain full precision while displayed values are rounded for readability. Repeating the calculation with a low, central, and high assumption is often more informative than relying on one point estimate. Interpret the result in context. WACC is commonly used as a discount-rate starting point for operating cash flows with risk similar to the existing business and a stable target capital structure. Compare like with like: use consistent accounting definitions, matching time periods, and comparable scenarios. A favorable result does not automatically mean an option is affordable, low risk, or suitable. It simply answers the mathematical question represented by the inputs and formula. Important limitations remain. Book values, historical interest expense, an average tax rate, or mismatched nominal and real assumptions can distort WACC. Preferred stock, leases, country risk, changing leverage, loss of tax shields, and project-specific risk may require adjustments. Taxes, fees, timing, eligibility rules, market movements, contractual terms, and rounding can change an actual outcome. Historical averages and published thresholds can also become outdated. Verify material decisions against current official guidance, statements, lender disclosures, or records, and document the assumptions used. Use WACC with a transparent capital structure and sensitivity range. A company-wide WACC should not automatically discount every project or security. Start with realistic values, review every result label, and then change one input at a time to see what drives the outcome. This sensitivity check can reveal whether the answer depends on a fragile assumption. Save or record the date and inputs if the calculation will support a budget, analysis, or conversation with an adviser. The WACC calculator provides an educational estimate and does not promise a future return, benefit, approval, price, or payment.

How to Calculate WACC

  1. Enter market values of equity and interest-bearing debt.
  2. Enter required equity and pre-tax debt costs.
  3. Enter the marginal tax rate.
  4. Select Calculate WACC and test a reasonable range.

WACC Calculator FAQ

What does the WACC calculator calculate?
It weights cost of equity and after-tax cost of debt by capital structure. WACC = E/(D+E) × cost of equity + D/(D+E) × cost of debt × (1 − tax rate).
Should I use book or market values?
Market values of equity and interest-bearing debt are the usual inputs for a forward-looking WACC. Book values can understate equity when the share price is far from carrying value.
Why is the tax rate applied only to debt?
Interest is generally tax-deductible while equity returns are not. The WACC calculator therefore multiplies the pretax debt cost by one minus the marginal tax rate.
How should I choose cost of equity and debt?
Use a required equity return consistent with the business risk and a current pretax borrowing cost, not a stale coupon. Test a range because small rate changes move discounted-cash-flow values.
Is this result valuation advice?
No. WACC is an educational discount-rate building block. Confirm capital-structure, tax, and project-risk assumptions with current data and a qualified professional.
