About the EBITDA Margin Calculator
EBITDA margin measures EBITDA as a percentage of revenue. It answers a useful scale-neutral question: for every dollar of sales, how much operating earnings remain before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization? This EBITDA Margin Calculator accepts total revenue and either a stated EBITDA amount or a net-income breakdown used to derive EBITDA. The percentage result can help compare profitability across years, business units, and companies of different sizes. It is best treated as one operating indicator rather than a complete statement of cash generation or financial health.
The formula is EBITDA divided by total revenue, multiplied by 100. If a company reports $122,000 of EBITDA on $1,000,000 of revenue, its EBITDA margin is 12.20%. When EBITDA is not directly available, the EBITDA margin calculator derives it by adding interest expense, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to net income. The operating-profit output removes depreciation and amortization from EBITDA, giving a simple view close to EBIT when the inputs are classified consistently. Use only one method at a time for the EBITDA amount so that expenses are not double counted.
A higher EBITDA margin can indicate pricing power, efficient operations, favorable product mix, or fixed costs spread over more revenue. A falling margin can signal price competition, input-cost inflation, lower utilization, or a shift toward lower-margin work. Context matters: software, retail, manufacturing, transportation, telecom, and professional services have very different capital intensity and normal margins. Rapid growth can temporarily reduce margin as a company invests in staff, marketing, facilities, or new markets. A high margin does not automatically mean high free cash flow if the business requires substantial investment in equipment, inventory, or customer financing.
Compare figures calculated under the same accounting policy and reporting period. Review adjusted EBITDA disclosures carefully because management may exclude restructuring charges, stock compensation, litigation, or other expenses. Currency should remain consistent across revenue and EBITDA, though the percentage itself is currency-neutral. Interest, taxes, and depreciation are still economically significant even though EBITDA margin excludes them. The calculator is a transparent analysis aid, not an audited measure, covenant calculation, valuation conclusion, or investment recommendation. Combine it with gross margin, EBIT margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt service, working-capital trends, and qualitative information about customers and competition.
EBITDA Margin Examples
Divide EBITDA by the revenue generated in the same period.
| Inputs | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000,000 revenue; $122,000 EBITDA | 12.20% EBITDA margin | EBITDA represents 12.2 cents of each revenue dollar. |
| $500,000 revenue; $75,000 EBITDA | 15.00% EBITDA margin | The percentage permits comparisons with larger businesses. |
| $1,000,000 revenue; $80,000 net income; $42,000 add-backs | 12.20% EBITDA margin | The breakdown derives $122,000 EBITDA. |

EBITDA Margin FAQ
What is a good EBITDA margin?
There is no universal benchmark. Compare the margin with close industry peers, the company's history, capital needs, and growth strategy.
Does EBITDA margin include taxes and interest?
No. EBITDA excludes interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization by definition.
Can EBITDA margin exceed net margin?
Yes. Net margin includes expenses that EBITDA excludes, including interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.
Why use the same reporting period?
Revenue and EBITDA must cover the same time period. Otherwise the ratio will not represent a meaningful operating margin.
